Lauro de Freitas is a municipality in the metropolitan area of Salvador, on the north coast of Bahia, Brazil. It houses famous residents with boxer Acelino "Popo" Freitas, presenter Scheila Carvalho and musicians Daminhão Experiença and Jimmy Cliff, among other singers and famous politicians.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, in 2013 its population was estimated at 184,383 inhabitants, spread over 57 square kilometers, resulting in approximately 3196 inhabitants per square kilometer. The city is one of the fastest growing in the country and was the fourth municipality that generated the most jobs in the year 2009.7 that is repeated over the years.

Around the year 1000, the region now occupied by the city was invaded by Tupi people coming from Amazon, which drove its ancient inhabitants, the tapuias, inland. In the sixteenth century, when the first Europeans arrived in the region, it was inhabited by the Tupi people of tupinambás12. In 1552, Garcia d'Avila received from Sousa, plots of land on the coast of Bahia.

There was installed, with family support Avila, owner of Tower House a Jesuit mission, which led, in 1758, the parish of Santo Amaro Ipitanga. The region was inhabited by indigenous people in Morro dos Pirambás. As it is situated in an area close to the sea, which favored the flow of agricultural production, came the sugar mills and, with them, African slaves, which strongly influenced the local culture. Even today, one can find descendants of slave families, guardians of African customs and practitioners of Candomblé.

In the seventeenth century, the city's history was marked by a cholera outbreak that wiped considerable portion of the population, and the construction of the Santo Amaro Ipitanga matrix, built on the highest part of the city. The matrix provided the best representative building of this colonial period in Brazil.

Originally, Lauro de Freitas belonged to Salvador, until, in 1880, became a district of Montenegro, current Camaçari. In 1932, he returned to Salvador, until, on July 31, 1962, was transformed into a municipality. Eleven years later, he joined the metropolitan area of Salvador.
